Role Purpose:

The Assistant Design Manager will support the Design Manager in overseeing the design processes for water and wastewater treatment projects.

The role involves assisting with coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing design performance, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards, such as the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM).

The Assistant Design Manager will also help implement design change management processes, monitor project progress, and contribute to delivering designs that meet project goals on time and within budget..

Role Summary:

  • Assist the Design Manager in managing the end-to-end design process for water and wastewater treatment projects, taking on the design management lead for a portfolio of projects

  • Support coordination between civil, mechanical, electrical, and process design teams and supply chain designers to ensure effective collaboration and integration.

  • Assist in implementing design performance management systems by tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) and ensuring project milestones are met.

  • Help apply Earned Value Analysis (EVA) to assess project progress, costs, and design performance, identifying variances and proposing corrective actions.

  • Assist in managing design changes, ensuring all changes are documented, controlled, and communicated to relevant stakeholders.

  • Ensure designs comply with technical standards, environmental regulations, and CDM requirements to prioritize safety during construction.

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to support the seamless transition from design to construction.

  • Assist in conducting design risk assessments and identifying opportunities for process optimization and safety improvements.

  • Stay informed on industry best practices, innovations, and emerging technologies within the water and wastewater treatment sector.

  • Participate in regular design review meetings, tracking action items, and providing updates on project progress

Technical Specification

Experience Required:

  • 3-5 years of experience in design coordination or engineering, preferably within the water or wastewater sector.

  • Familiarity with water treatment processes, technologies, and design standards.

  • Knowledge of design performance management, including tools like Earned Value Analysis (EVA) to track progress and costs.

  • Experience supporting design change management and implementing design revisions within projects.

  • Understanding of CDM regulations and their application during the design phase to ensure health and safety considerations.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Design, Architecture, Design Management, Construction Management or a related field.

  • Good knowledge of water and wastewater treatment design processes and industry regulations.

  • Familiarity with design tools, project management software, and engineering workflows.

  • Understanding of CDM regulations and experience in assisting with safety-focused design management.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field.

  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2).

  • Experience using BIM (Building Information Modeling) and other digital design tools.

  • Familiarity with sustainability principles and energy-efficient design in water treatment projects.
